Claims Specialists (CS) in Field Offices play a vital role in delivering Social Security benefits and services to the public, both in person and over the phone. As a CS, you will conduct interviews to obtain, clarify, and verify information for initial eligibility for various benefits. In addition, you will resolve discrepancies, clarify issues, and make final decisions regarding initial and post-entitlement benefits and payments. You will adjudicate entitlement or disallowance actions and use SSA’s computer systems to access and update claims information.
The Claims Specialist position starts at the GS-5 or GS-7 level, depending on experience or university GPA. The career ladder for this position goes up to GS-11, which can typically be attained within 2 to 3 years of experience. Currently, the GS-11 salary is $87,061.
